In Riverbend’s blog she is setting the scene for her readers. She describes of aspect of her everyday life. She is a young female who is determined to show people the effects of the war in Iraq. Riverbend establishes her character within the blog. Unlike most novels with made up characters, Riverbend is a real person who experience everything that she writes about. Riverbend is not able to reveal her identity because it can place her family and her friend in great danger. Also with her identity concealed she can be able to express her views about female rights, the government and its political figures without getting prosecuted.
With her ability to express herself we can have a glimpse about Riverbend as a person. I can tell from her writings that she is outspoken, honest, courageous, hardworking, and is a dedicated activist for everything that she believes in. You can see how she writes about female rights in the quote on page 68,"the worst part of the whole show was when they showed a mortician in Baghdad claiming he hardly ever saw any rape victims! ...women are too ashamed to make rape public, and why bother when you just *know* the person will never be caught when no one is going to bother to look for the aggressor?” Riverbend shows her reader the truth about what is really going on with women and their rights. I believe that she is expressing how the system is corrupt and that the system is flawed. The government says that there are not a lot of rapes because women don’t go and get it reported, but women who do report the rapes usually are shamed by their family. The main questions for Iraqi women that have been raped is really either too be, look upon with shame by her family or too keep a secret that will haunt her till the day she dies. It is a double lose situation, and there is no winner.
There is a cause for every action that Riverbend makes. She always makes it clear that she wants change. The change that has been happening has been done by “puppets” as she calls them. She wants Baghdad to return to peace. She wants her nation to grow. Within her blog she allows others to comment on her posting. She may voice her opinions but she allows others to put in their input. She is very understanding and reads all others thoughts. I have not been just reading about Baghdad, but learning about a person who expresses herself in an unconventional way. By writing in her blog it allows the people from the outside to look at the world in a different point of view. I would have never learnt about some of the truths that are hidden from the public view in America. Although I may disagree with some things that she states about the troops, I can understand where she is coming from. If the war was happen on US soil her perspectives would be a little bit different. I am glad that I was able to understand the main character and form a relationship with the writer. She establishes herself very well with the reader and she remains true to her morals and ideas.
